Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken 2022

Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken is a dry Rheingau Riesling from a 3.8-hectare monopole the estate had reinstated as a classified single site in 2005.

The Rheingau runs along a south-facing stretch of the Rhine between Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim, and Kiedrich sits above the river on the lower slopes of the Taunus hills. Robert Weil has been based there since 1875 and is one of the region's benchmark Riesling estates. Turmberg is a steep monopole named for the surviving tower of Burg Scharfenstein, the twelfth-century castle whose ruins stand above the vineyard. As in the neighbouring Klosterberg, the vines are 30 to 50 years old. The German wine law of 1971 folded the site into adjoining Gräfenberg, and in 2005 Wilhelm Weil succeeded in having it reinstated in the vineyard register as a classified site in its own right, reflecting a terroir that had historically been treated as separate. Although Turmberg is entitled to Grosse Lage status, Weil chooses to bottle it as an Erste Lage: there is only one tip on a pyramid, he explains, and that place belongs to Gräfenberg. The wine is fermented dry.

Drinking well now and worth a decade or more in the cellar. Serve at 10–12°C with river trout, roast pork or a mild coconut curry.
