Description
Roc Breïa Chardonnay is a Mâconnais white bottled as Vin de France so that Théo Dancer can pick to his own timetable.
Bray sits in the north of the Mâconnais alongside Cruzille and Verzé, one of the cooler and later-ripening corners of the region. The Roc Breïa vines face west and the site is windy, which keeps disease pressure low. The Chardonnay comes from plantings of the mid-1940s and mid-1970s. Winemaking is deliberately plain: the fruit is whole-bunch pressed, fermented in used 500-litre barrels, and bottled unfiltered with the only sulphur addition made at bottling, a modest 20 mg/L. Rather than claim the Mâcon-Bray appellation, Dancer labels the wine Vin de France, which frees him from the rules on picking dates and lets him harvest for freshness. The result runs against the usual expectation of Mâcon: a juicy, punchy white Burgundy with unusual raciness for the area.
Ready now and worth keeping for three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled prawns, chicken and tarragon or a goat’s cheese salad.
