Description
Roc Breïa Mâcon Villages is a Chardonnay from vines planted in the 1940s and 1970s at Bray, made without appellation constraints on picking dates.
Roc Breïa is the Mâconnais project of Théo Dancer, working with the vigneron Bastien Cubillé, and the vineyard is being brought back into balance through cover cropping, inter-vine cultivation and an end to herbicides. The winemaking is deliberately plain: the Chardonnay is pressed as whole bunches straight to used 500-litre barrels for fermentation, and the wine is bottled unfiltered with a very small addition of sulphur, around 20 mg/L. Rather than claim the Mâcon-Bray appellation, Dancer labels the wine Vin de France, which frees him to pick when he chooses. The style runs against the regional stereotype, being linear and fresh, with citrus and nectarine weight rather than the broader, sun-ripened character often found here.
Drink over the next five years with grilled fish, roast chicken or a goat's cheese tart. Serve at 10-12°C.
