Description

Roc Breïa Pinot Noir is a Mâconnais red from Théo Dancer, made with around half whole bunches and raised in used 500-litre barrels.

The village of Bray lies in the north of the Mâconnais, in the cooler, later-ripening zone that also takes in Cruzille and Verzé. Pinot Noir has a long history in this part of southern Burgundy, even if Chardonnay now dominates the plantings, and the clay-limestone soils here suit it. The Roc Breïa Pinot vines were planted between 1970 and 1985, a little younger than the Chardonnay, on west-facing slopes where the wind keeps disease pressure low. Dancer ferments with roughly fifty per cent whole bunches, then matures the wine in used 500-litre barrels, making a rigorous barrel selection and leaving out anything that does not meet the mark before the final blend is assembled. The style is deliberately elegant rather than extracted, and it makes a good argument for what the Mâconnais can do with the variety.

Drinking well now, though it opens up considerably with air, so decant. Serve at 16-18°C with roast quail, mushrooms on toast or a soft washed-rind cheese.
