Roches Neuves Saumur Blanc Clos Romans 2020

Roches Neuves Saumur Blanc Clos Romans is a biodynamic Chenin Blanc from a walled priory vineyard on the limestone ridge at Parnay.

Saumur's white wines come from Chenin Blanc grown over Turonian limestone, and Clos Romans is one of the sites regularly spoken of as a grand cru of the appellation. The vines are rooted in the walled enclave of a priory dating from the eleventh century, planted atop the ridge at Parnay just outside Saumur, where the roots burrow through the Pierres de Champigny bedrock above the region's troglodyte cellars. Thierry Germain acquired the site in 2007 and has been replanting steadily at 12,000 vines per hectare, using massale selection to keep the material diverse. The estate is biodynamic, and this vineyard is among those ploughed under the direction of his daughter Jeanne. The hand-picked grapes were whole-bunch pressed and fermented in neutral cask, which in the cold tufa cellars can take two months, then bottled unfiltered after nine months on lees.

Drinking now but worth five to ten years, as with any serious Chenin. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled crayfish or a goat's cheese.
