Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny Terres Chaudes 2023

Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny Terres Chaudes now comes exclusively from the Poyeux terroir at Chaintres, in the heart of the appellation.

Saumur-Champigny sits on the left bank of the Loire near Saumur, where Cabernet Franc grows on shallow soils over tuffeau limestone. Poyeux is one of its most celebrated sites, best known through the Clos Rougeard bottling. Thierry Germain has farmed Roches Neuves biodynamically for many years, and Terres Chaudes, once a blend of two terroirs, is now drawn solely from this slope, where the topsoil is very shallow before the roots reach limestone. The vines average about fifty years. All the fruit is destemmed and ferments in cement with some foot treading, after which the wine matures in 60-hectolitre neutral wooden vats. The result is refined and silky in texture while keeping the ripe, spiced, mineral imprint of the site.

It will open up over about three years and drink well beyond; serve with roast lamb, duck or grilled mushrooms at 16 to 18°C.
