Description
Salvard Val de Loire Sauvignon Blanc is an unoaked Sauvignon from mature vines on the sandy clay of Cheverny, previously labelled Unique.
Cheverny lies in the Touraine, east of Blois, on sandy clay soils that give Sauvignon Blanc a lighter, more direct profile than the flint-driven wines of Sancerre and Pouilly further upstream. Domaine du Salvard is run by the Delaille brothers, and this bottling comes from mature vines at Fougères-sur-Bièvre. It carries the broader Val de Loire designation and has been renamed, with a new label by the French-based artist Louise Sheeran, having previously been sold as Unique. The wine is 100 per cent Sauvignon Blanc raised on lees in stainless steel without any oak at all, which keeps the emphasis on pithy citrus fruit, smoky freshness and acidity rather than texture. It is a straightforward, well-made vin de soif of the sort the Loire does better than anywhere.
Drink young, within two or three years, as an aperitif or with goat's cheese, oysters or a green salad. Serve at 10 degrees.
