Salvard Val de Loire Sauvignon Blanc 2023

Salvard Val de Loire Sauvignon Blanc is an unoaked, lees-aged Sauvignon from mature vines on the sandy clay of Cheverny.

Cheverny sits in the Loir-et-Cher, upstream from Touraine and a good distance inland from Sancerre, and its best wines are among the more rewarding buys in Loire Sauvignon. Domaine du Salvard has been a standard-bearer there since Maurice Delaille bought the property in 1900, replanting the vineyards and renovating the estate. The fruit comes from mature vines rooted in the sandy clay soils around Fougères-sur-Bièvre. The wine, known by its butterfly label, is entirely Sauvignon Blanc and is raised on lees with no oak whatsoever, then bottled as Val de Loire rather than under the Cheverny appellation. Lees contact gives it a pithy, chalky texture that stops it being merely brisk, and it is sealed under screwcap.

Best over the next two years. Serve at 10-12°C with goat's cheese, oysters or a herb-dressed salad.
