Description
Les Auvonnes au Pépé comes from a tenth of a hectare of Aligoté Doré planted by Sylvain Pataille's grandfather in the 1930s.
Pataille has done as much as anyone to rehabilitate Aligoté, bottling several parcels separately at Marsannay rather than blending them away. En Auvonnes lies on the lower part of the slope near the D974, on the boundary between Marsannay and Couchey, where dense marl is scattered with cailloux calcaires — limestone stones that encourage the faintly reductive, flinty character the wine is known for. Pépé is French shorthand for grandfather, and the vines here were planted by Armand Pataille some ninety years ago in the Aligoté Doré selection, the low-yielding, better-quality cultivar. The tiny parcel makes only a few barrels. Winemaking is unshowy, with natural fermentation and ageing in neutral vessels so the site rather than the cellar does the talking.
Drink over the next three to five years; serve at 10–12°C with oysters, shellfish or a young goat's cheese.
