Description
Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Blanc is a village white blended from five parcels, the oldest vines dating from 1949.
The cuvée draws on Les Larreys, Clos du Roy and En Blungey, along with fruit from newly planted vines in Couchey. Marsannay's whites are less well known than its reds but the limestone slopes at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits suit Chardonnay well, giving wines with both flesh and grip. The wine ferments and ages for eighteen months in 600-litre barrels, with a touch of new oak, a format Pataille favours because it allows a long élevage without heavy wood character. It opens compact and smoky before unfurling in fleshy layers of nectarine and creamy citrus, and the palate balances freshness against that flesh. This is 100 per cent Chardonnay, and the finish is detailed and long.
Drinking well now and capable of five to seven years; serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, grilled snapper or a young comté.
