Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Blanc 2021

Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Blanc is a village white drawn from five parcels, the oldest vines dating from 1949.

Marsannay is best known for red and rosé, but its limestone slopes also produce white wine of real cut, and Sylvain Pataille is among the growers making the case for it. This cuvée is entirely Chardonnay, blended from five parcels including Les Larreys, Clos du Roy and En Blungey, along with fruit from young vines in Couchée; the oldest plantings in the blend go back to 1949. The wine ferments and ages for eighteen months in 600-litre barrels, a larger format that limits the influence of the wood, and Pataille uses only a touch of new oak. The domaine's approach throughout is low-intervention, with indigenous yeasts, minimal sulphur and long maturation, and the result here is a detailed, expressive white with a long finish.

It drinks well from release and will hold five to eight years; serve with roast chicken, river fish or a soft cheese at 10-12°C.
