Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy comes from 2.25 hectares in what many consider the finest terroir of the appellation.

Alongside Longeroies and Champ Perdix, the Clos du Roy is one of Marsannay's largest and most revered vineyards, and the name carries its own claim: Roy is the old French spelling of roi, king. It is a steep, east-facing slope above the village of Chenôve, on the same line as the Gevrey premier crus to the south, with lightish red soil, some sand, over a bed of Comblanchien limestone. When Marsannay is finally granted its first premier crus, Clos du Roy is expected to be near the front of the queue. Pataille farms vines planted in 1952, 1965, 1978 and 2001 here, and the cuvée is treated accordingly in the cellar: fermentation almost entirely with whole bunches, eighteen months in barrel and six months in tank before an unfiltered bottling.

Worth three to five years and good for a decade or more; serve at 16–18°C with roast beef, duck or a mature washed-rind cheese.
