Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy 2021

Sylvain Pataille's Marsannay Clos du Roy comes from what many consider the finest terroir in the appellation, a steep east-facing slope above the village of Chenôve.

Marsannay is the northernmost commune of the Côte de Nuits and the only one there permitted to make red, white and rosé, yet it still has no premier cru. Clos du Roy ranks alongside Longeroies and Champs Perdix as one of its largest and most revered vineyards, and it lies on the same line as the Gevrey premiers crus to the south. The name preserves the old French spelling of roi. Soils are lightish red, with some sand, over a bed of Comblanchien limestone. Sylvain Pataille, a trained oenologist who consults widely in the Côte, farms 2.25 hectares in the clos from vines planted in 1952, 1965, 1978 and 2001. The fruit ferments almost entirely as whole bunches; the wine then spends 18 months in barrel and a further six in tank before being bottled unfiltered. When Marsannay is finally granted premier cru status, this site is expected to be near the front of the queue.

Best given three to five years and good for a decade. Serve with roast beef, game birds or a ripe Époisses at 16–18°C.
