Sylvain Pataille Marsannay La Charme Aux Prêtres 2020

Sylvain Pataille Marsannay La Charme Aux Prêtres is a village white from the thin, rocky top of an east-facing slope in Marsannay.

Marsannay is one of the few Côte de Nuits communes with a real white wine tradition, and Pataille has both Chardonnay and Aligoté planted in La Charme Aux Prêtres, a sloping, east-facing vineyard lying between 280 and 320 metres. The Chardonnay occupies the top of the slope, where the soils are thin, white and rocky. Pataille credits the marl here with the smoky, reductive minerality that consistently marks this cuvée, a character that sets it apart from his other whites. The vines are approaching thirty years of age, and the wine spent two winters on lees before bottling, an élevage long enough to build texture without losing the site's cut. This is a bottling of 100 per cent Chardonnay.

Best with a year or two in bottle and good for five; serve at 10–12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a hard alpine cheese.
