Sylvain Pataille Marsannay La Charme Aux Prêtres 2021

Sylvain Pataille Marsannay La Charme Aux Prêtres is a Chardonnay from vines planted in 1949 at the top of an east-facing slope.

Marsannay sits at the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits and is the only village appellation in the Côte d'Or entitled to make red, white and rosé, though white remains a small part of what it produces. Pataille, who trained as an oenologist before taking on the family vines, holds 0.17 hectares in La Charme Aux Prêtres, planted to both Chardonnay and Aligoté across a slope running from 280 to 320 metres. The Chardonnay occupies the upper section, where the soils are thin, white and rocky. Pataille credits the marl here with the smoky, reductive character he consistently finds in the cuvée, a quality he works to preserve rather than blow off. The wine spent two winters on lees before bottling.

Approachable now and good for six to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a soft cheese.
