Description
Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rouge is the domaine's signature red, drawn from a patchwork of old vines across three communes.
The blend covers more than two hectares spread across Chenôve, Couchey and Marsannay-la-Côte, the three villages entitled to the Marsannay appellation at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits. Every vine in the cuvée was planted between 1950 and 1980, so even the youngest is around forty years old, and that age is the main reason the wine carries more depth than its village status suggests. Ageing takes place in a mixture of used barriques and several old 600-litre demi-muids, formats that keep oak influence in the background. The final blend includes around 80 per cent whole bunches, in keeping with Pataille's approach across the range, which favours gentle extraction and long, unhurried élevage before an unfiltered bottling.
Approachable from release and good for five to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or mushroom dishes.
