Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rouge 2022

Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rouge is a village wine drawn from a patchwork of more than two hectares across three communes.

Marsannay sits at the northern gate of the Côte de Nuits, the only village in the Côte d'Or permitted to make red, white and rosé under its own name, and it remains one of the better value addresses in Burgundy. Sylvain Pataille has done as much as anyone to raise its standing since setting up in 1999, and this is arguably his signature red. The parcels behind it are spread across Chenôve, Couchey and Marsannay-la-Côte, all planted between 1950 and 1980, which puts even the youngest vines beyond forty years. Around 80 per cent of the fruit goes into the fermenter as whole bunches. Ageing takes place in a mixture of used barriques and several old 600-litre demi-muids, with no new oak to sit over the fruit.

Drinking now and worth cellaring five to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, duck breast or a mushroom tart.
