Description
Tenuta Luce Brunello di Montalcino is a pure Sangiovese from the Luce estate's hillside vineyards, made within the strict rules of the Brunello DOCG.
While the property is best known for its Merlot and Sangiovese blend, its Brunello shows what Sangiovese alone can do on these slopes south-west of Montalcino, inside the Val d'Orcia. The fruit comes from the Madonnino vineyard at about 400 metres, where altitude and well-drained soils help the grapes keep their freshness. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks with several weeks on skins, and the wine then spends at least 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, the traditional vessel for Brunello, before further ageing in bottle. It is released in the fifth year after harvest, as the appellation requires.
Give it an hour or more in a decanter and serve at around 18 degrees. Brunello calls for hearty food such as bistecca, braised beef, roast pigeon, pici with ragù or mature cheeses. It will keep improving for fifteen to twenty years.
