Terroir al Límit Priorat Históric Blanc 2019

Terroir Históric Blanc is Dominik Huber's homage to the Priorat that existed before the region's modern reinvention.

Little is heard about the wines Priorat made before René Barbier arrived with French technique and the region drew the attention of American critics. This bottling looks back to that period. Huber works co-operative style with a roster of younger growers who, with his guidance, have invested in organic, first-rate viticulture, and the fruit may be drawn from all nine historic villages of the appellation: El Lloar, Porrera, La Vilella Baixa, La Vilella Alta, Escaladei, Bellmunt, Gratallops, Torroja and Poboleda. The blend is seventy-five per cent Grenache Blanc and twenty-five per cent Macabeo, roughly what a white from here would have been a generation ago. Grapes are pressed whole-cluster, fermented with wild yeasts and raised six months on lees in a 5,000-litre concrete tank. There is no destemming, no stainless steel, no pigeage, no extraction and no new oak, so the Mediterranean texture comes through with the fruit held in restraint.

Drink over the next four or five years, with grilled prawns, roast chicken or hard cheese. Serve at 10-12°C.
