Description
Terroir al Límit Priorat Les Manyes is a Grenache from the highest vineyard in Priorat, classified by the estate as Vi d'Altura.
Les Manyes lies high in the Montsant ranges at 800 metres, the highest site in the appellation, on a cool north-facing slope of just 1.4 hectares planted around fifty-four years ago. Where the estate's Les Tosses is Cariñena on pure llicorella slate, Les Manyes is predominantly clay with elements of quartz and limestone, and is planted almost exclusively to Grenache. Altitude and exposure hold back ripening, and the wine that results is the antithesis of Priorat's blockbuster image, closer in build to fine red Burgundy than to the region's more extracted bottlings. Dominik Huber ferments the cuvée with whole bunches and indigenous yeasts, and from the 2016 vintage onwards it has seen no contact with wood at any stage. Terroir al Límit treats this as its grand cru, and it states the estate's intentions more plainly than any other wine it makes.
It will develop over fifteen years and should be decanted when young; serve at 16-17°C with roast duck, wild mushrooms or an aged hard cheese.
