Terroir al Límit Priorat Terra de Cuques Negre 2021

Terra de Cuques Negre is the new name for Terroir al Límit's Torroja village wine, now drawing on several Priorat villages rather than one.

Priorat's identity comes from llicorella, the fractured slate that forces vines deep for water and gives the region's reds their concentration and mineral spine. Dominik Huber renamed this cuvée because he wanted to widen its sources, and this release includes fruit from small vineyards in the cooler, high-altitude terroirs of Poboleda and La Morera, towards the Montsant ranges. The blend remains an equal split of Carignan and Grenache. At over 350 metres these are among the highest old-vine red sites in Priorat, with the youngest vines more than 30 years old; most sit on llicorella, though a portion of the Grenache is planted on sparser limestone and clay. The cuvée also takes any declassified material from the estate's top vineyards. It is made with 100% whole bunches, hand-harvested and layered into tank so their own weight releases enough juice to start fermentation, then raised in concrete for 14 months.

Firm but unforced, it will drink well for eight to ten years; decant and serve at 16-17°C with roast lamb, grilled meats or an aged Manchego.
