Théo Dancer Vin de France Aragón Grenache 2022

Théo Dancer's Aragón is a whole-bunch Grenache from an organically farmed vineyard at Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes, bottled outside the appellation system as Vin de France.

Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes lies between Orange and Montélimar, close to Cairanne in the southern Rhône. The vineyard is shaded, looks out towards Mont Ventoux, and its soils are littered with the smooth galets roulés that cover so much of the district; it had been managed organically for years before Dancer took the fruit, which was a large part of the attraction. Like his father he is a committed Grenache enthusiast, and he spent a season looking for the right source before settling on this one. Picking was in late August. The fruit was fermented as whole clusters and raised in used 456-litre barrels, an approach that owes more to Burgundy than to conventional southern Rhône practice. The stems are well absorbed and lift a ripe, fleshy yet floral core, so the wine is deep without losing balance or interest.

Drinking well now and good for five or six years. Serve at around 16°C with grilled lamb, roast capsicum dishes or a herbed sausage.
