Thierry Germain Saumur Blanc I'Insolite 2021

Thierry Germain Saumur Blanc L’Insolite is a dry Chenin Blanc from two densely planted vineyards near Saumur where the oldest vines are around 90 years old.

L’Insolite has become one of the Loire’s benchmark dry Chenins. Its fruit traditionally comes from Les Cerpes and Saint-Vincent, two lieux-dits close to the town of Saumur on clay and limestone riddled with sandstone and flint, farmed organically. In this release the wine carries Thierry Germain’s own name rather than the domaine label because purchased fruit was needed to supplement the estate crop after dramatically reduced yields. Germain presses the whole bunches long and slow, then lets the juice ferment naturally in 1,200-litre Stockinger ovals and 600-litre casks bought used from Alphonse Mellot. The wine then rests on fine lees for another twelve months, building texture before bottling. Germain thinks of it as the Loire’s answer to German Riesling, hence the name, which means unusual.

Drinking well now and worth five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a goat’s cheese salad.
