Description
Uwe Schiefer Vom Blauen Schiefer is a Blaufränkisch grown on the blue schist of the Eisenberg, on Austria's border with Hungary.
The Eisenberg, in the Südburgenland, is the coolest and most southerly of Austria's Blaufränkisch districts, and Schiefer's hillside vines sit on a green-blue slate veined with iron that gives the cuvée its name. Altitude and the cool border climate keep acidity high and ripening slow, and Schiefer's wines here have become a reference for the lighter, more transparent Austrian style that emerged from the late 1990s. The blend draws on estate parcels across the slopes of the Eisenberg hill. Fruit was hand-harvested and fermented with ambient yeasts, then matured for two years on lees in large, mature oak vessels. It was bottled without fining or filtration.
Drinking well now and worth keeping five to ten years; decant young. Serve at 16–18°C with duck, veal schnitzel or roast mushrooms.
