Description

Uwe Schiefer's Purbach rosé is a bone-dry, whole-bunch Blaufränkisch made in a phenolic, textural style closer to an orange wine than to anything from Provence.

The fruit comes from Blaufränkisch rooted in the Muschelkalk, the shell limestone of the Leithaberg on the western shore of the Neusiedlersee. Uwe Schiefer built his reputation further south in the Eisenberg, and he has been refining this dry, food-driven pink style since the late 1990s. Fermentation starts with whole bunches, and the juice is pressed off after three days of infusion to finish its fermentation and élevage in large, old oak barrels. The result is bone dry, with real grip and phenolic texture behind the racy acidity, and it carries the lees character and savour of a white wine made in the same way. Volumes are small and the wine is bottled with minimal intervention.

Best treated as a light red at the table rather than as an aperitif. Serve at 10–12°C with grilled quail, charcuterie, or pork with paprika.
