Valdesil Godello Sobre Lías 2020

Valdesil Godello Sobre Lías is a lees-aged white from Valdeorras, the Galician appellation that led the revival of the Godello grape.

Valdeorras sits at the eastern edge of Galicia, inland from the Atlantic, where the river Sil has cut terraces into grey slate. Godello was close to extinction here in the 1970s and the Gayoso family were among those who brought it back; Bodegas Valdesil, which they run, now farms one of the largest old-vine holdings of the variety in the region. Sobre Lías, Spanish for 'on lees', draws on a spread of estate parcels averaging thirty years of age on the hillsides around Córgomo and Portela, in the municipality of Vilamartín de Valdeorras. The fruit is given six hours of skin contact before pressing, fermented with indigenous yeasts and then held six months on its fine lees. The slate supplies the firm line through the wine, and the lees ageing rounds the texture without obscuring it.

Drinking well now and for three or four years; serve at 10-12°C with grilled octopus, pork empanada or a hard sheep's cheese.
