Valdesil Godello Sobre Lías 2022

Valdesil Godello Sobre Lías is the estate white, aged six months on its fine lees in stainless steel.

Valdeorras lies at the eastern end of Galicia, and the slate slopes above Vilamartín de Valdeorras are its best-known ground for Godello. This wine is a selection of plots there, averaging 35 years of age and 500 metres in altitude, rooted in blue slate, shale or schist. Because the parcels face in different directions they ripen at different times, so Valdesil harvests and vinifies each one separately. The older plantings crop at around 22 hl/ha and were grafted from the estate's Pedrouzos vineyard, planted in 1885. Every parcel is picked by hand and fermented with wild yeasts, then blended and held for six months sobre lías — on lees — in stainless steel. That gives a wine with more flesh and texture than the entry bottling while keeping the chalky precision and the thread of acidity that mark good Valdeorras.

Drink it over the next three to four years with grilled fish, pork loin or fresh goat's cheese. Serve at 10–12°C.
