Valdesil Montenovo Blanco 2020

Valdesil Montenovo Blanco is the estate's entry-level Godello, propagated by massale selection from vines more than 130 years old.

Valdeorras, at the eastern limit of Galicia, is the heartland of Godello, a variety that was close to extinction fifty years ago and now underpins some of Spain's most distinctive whites. Bodegas Valdesil has become a reference point for the grape, and the cuttings behind Montenovo come from the estate's oldest material in the Pedrouzos vineyard. The fruit is drawn from younger plantings spread across the slate-strewn villages of Rubiá, A Rúa, Larouco, Petín and O Bolo. Each soil type and plot is vinified separately before assembly, and malolactic fermentation is suppressed so the wine keeps its acidity and its firm, saline line. There is no new oak, and the emphasis falls on texture rather than weight.

Best drunk within three or four years of the vintage. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled prawns, salt cod or a roast chicken.
