Valdesil Montenovo Godello 2022

Valdesil Montenovo Godello is the estate's entry white, made from high-altitude plantings propagated from its oldest vineyard.

Valdesil has become a gold-standard source for Godello on the strength of its old vines and its highland sites in Valdeorras, at the eastern edge of Galicia. Montenovo is drawn from vineyards spread across the slate-strewn villages of Rubiá, A Rúa, Larouco, Petín and O Bolo. The plantings average about fifteen years of age and are all mass selections taken from the oldest Godello in Spain, the 130-year-old vines of the family's Pedrouzos vineyard. The fruit is fermented with wild yeasts and raised in stainless steel, with no oak, so the emphasis falls on the fleshy citrus fruit and the chalky, smoky minerality that the slate gives. For an entry-level wine it carries a good deal of the estate's house character.

Drink it young, within two or three years, with grilled sardines, salads or a plate of empanada. Serve at 10–12°C.
