Valdesil Pezas Da Portela 2013

Valdesil Pezas Da Portela is a Godello drawn from eleven old-vine parcels on the slate slopes of Portela above the River Sil.

The pezas that give this wine its name are small parcels forming part of the Gayoso family's original holdings in Valdeorras. They were planted in the early 1900s by José Ramón Gayoso's sons using massale selection cuttings taken from the Pedrouzos vineyard, and every one of them overlooks the River Sil at an average altitude of 500 metres on slate. Slate holds warmth and drains hard, which suits Godello's combination of flesh and acidity. The juice was given around twelve hours of skin contact before fermenting naturally in a range of oak vessels, predominantly 600-litre barrels of third or fourth use together with 2,000-litre vats, and the wine did not go through malolactic fermentation. The core is fleshy orchard fruit, with a floral, resinous and smoky complexity around it.

Do not serve it too cold: 11-12°C in a large glass, with air, brings out its depth. It suits grilled octopus, roast pork or a rich fish stew.
