Valdesil Pezas da Portela 2018

Valdesil Pezas da Portela is a single-site Godello drawn from eleven parcels of old vines on the slate slopes of Portela in Valdeorras.

Valdeorras lies at the eastern edge of Galicia, inland and drier than the Atlantic appellations, where Godello was rescued from near-extinction in the 1970s. Bodegas Valdesil is the Gayoso family estate at Vilamartín, and the pezas, or parcels, that make this wine form part of their original holdings; all were planted by José Ramón Gayoso's sons in the early 1900s from massale selection cuttings taken in the Pedrouzos vineyard. They overlook the River Sil at an average of 500 metres on slate, which keeps acidity firm and yields low. The juice is given around twelve hours of skin contact, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in a range of oak vessels, chiefly 600-litre barrels of third or fourth use and 2,000-litre vats. Malolactic fermentation is blocked, so the wine keeps its cut while the lees and large-format wood build texture.

Give it a large glass and do not over-chill it; serve at 11-12°C with grilled turbot, roast chicken or salt cod.
