Description
Valdesil Pezas da Portela is an old-vine Godello drawn from eleven parcels on the slate slopes of Portela in Valdeorras.
Portela lies in the municipality of Vilamartín de Valdeorras, on slopes of grey slate overlooking the river Sil at around 500 metres. The parcels behind this wine form part of the Gayoso family's original holdings and were planted by José Ramón Gayoso's sons in the early 1900s, using massale cuttings taken from the Pedrouzos vineyard, the same source that underpins Valdesil's standing for old Godello. Yields from vines of this age are small and the fruit arrives with concentration already built in. The juice is given around twelve hours of skin contact, then fermented naturally in a mix of oak vessels, mostly 600-litre barrels of third or fourth use alongside 2,000-litre vats, so the wood contributes texture and a slow exchange of air rather than flavour. The result is a white with real substance and the saline grip that slate reliably brings.
It will reward five to eight years in bottle; serve at 11-12°C with turbot, roast pork belly or a mature Tetilla.
