Description
Valdesil Pezas da Portela Godello is a soil-specific white grown on the pure slate slopes around the parish of Portela.
Valdeorras, in eastern Galicia, is the reference point for Godello, and Valdesil has done as much as any estate to establish it. The pezas — the family's historic small plots — lie around Portela in Vilamartín de Valdeorras at an average of 500 metres on pure slate, and were planted in the early 1900s by José Ramón Gayoso's sons using cuttings from the old Pedrouzos vineyard. The grapes are given about twelve hours of skin contact before fermenting naturally in a range of oak vessels, mostly 600-litre casks of third or fourth use and 2,000-litre vats. Malolactic conversion is blocked, which keeps the acidity taut. The oak is used for texture rather than flavour, and the wine has the density and slow build of a serious white Burgundy from a cool, rocky site.
Best served in a large glass and not too cold, around 12°C, with roast chicken, scallops or a soft-rinded cheese; it will develop over the next five years.
