Valdesil Valderroa Mencia 2019

Valdesil Valderroa Mencía is an unoaked old-vine red from Valdeorras, made by a house far better known for its Godello.

Valdeorras sits at the eastern, mountainous edge of Galicia, where the Sil river cuts through slate and the vineyards climb the valley walls. Valdesil is the reference producer of the appellation, its reputation built on Godello holdings that include the Pedrouzos vineyard planted in 1885, but the estate also farms a small quantity of Mencía to a similar standard. The fruit for Valderroa comes from old bush vines set between 500 and 550 metres on south-facing, slate-rich slopes around the village of O Moullón, in the mountainous eastern limits of the region. Altitude keeps the nights cool and the acidity firm, while the slate gives the wine its lean, savoury frame. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, then held in tank for roughly eight months before bottling. No oak is used at any stage, so variety and site do the talking.

Ready on release and worth drinking over the next three or four years; serve at 16°C with grilled lamb cutlets, chorizo or a mushroom risotto.
