Description
Valdesil Valderroa Mencía is a steel-raised red from the mountainous eastern edge of Valdeorras.
Valdeorras is best known for Godello, but Mencía is the region's principal red variety, and at altitude it gives a wine of moderate weight and firm acidity rather than power. Bodegas Valdesil is a Gayoso family estate whose name rests on its Godello holdings, including the Pedrouzos vineyard planted in 1885, and the Mencía is handled on the same terms. The fruit comes from old bush vines set between 500 and 550 metres on south-facing, slate-rich slopes around the village of O Moullón, in the mountains at the eastern limit of the appellation. Grapes are picked by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then aged about eight months, again in steel. There is no oak, which leaves the slate character and the variety's savoury, herbal edge unmasked. It is the estate's entry-level red and is made to be drunk rather than cellared.
Best over the next three years; serve at 16°C, a touch below room temperature, with grilled lamb, chorizo or a lentil stew.
