Description
Valdesil Valderroa is a Mencía from old bush vines on slate in the mountainous eastern edge of Valdeorras, made by a producer better known for white wine.
Valdeorras sits in eastern Galicia, where Atlantic influence meets altitude and steep slate slopes. Valdesil built its reputation on Godello, and its Mencía is made in small quantity alongside those whites. The fruit for this bottling comes from old bush vines planted between 500 and 550 metres on south-facing, slate-rich ground at the mountainous eastern limit of the appellation. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with no oak used at any stage, so the wine keeps its lifted, cherry-scented Galician character intact and its colour bright. Rocky soils, altitude and cool Atlantic weather together account for the racy acidity, while the plush, silky texture comes from the age of the vines.
Drinking well now and over four or five years. Serve slightly cool, at 15-16°C, with charcuterie, grilled pork or a plate of empanada.
