Valenciso Rioja Blanco 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Valenciso Rioja Blanco is a barrel-aged white built on four highland vineyards of vines more than a century old.

White Rioja covers everything from a fresh tank-fermented Viura to a long-aged classic, and Valenciso sits between the two, taking very old vines and giving them measured oak. The blend is seventy per cent Viura and thirty per cent Grenache Blanc, from four ancient, low-yielding vineyards in the highlands around Rodezno, Haro and Villalba. Vines of that age crop very little and deliver fruit with concentration already built in. The wine is fermented with wild yeasts and then aged nine months on its lees in Russian steam-bent, untoasted oak barrels. That Caucasian wood is fine-grained, and because the barrels are untoasted they contribute texture and a slow exchange of air rather than oak flavour, which is the point: the balance is meant to fall on the fruit rather than the vessel.

Drink now or hold five to eight years; serve at 11-12°C with roast chicken, grilled hake or a wedge of Idiazábal.
