Description
Valenciso Tempranillo Blanco is a three-barrel bottling of a white mutation of Tempranillo found in the estate's own vines.
Tempranillo Blanco shares 97.8 per cent of its DNA with the dark-skinned Tempranillo from which it mutated. It was first identified in 1988 at Murillo de Río Leza in Rioja, and the Consejo Regulador admitted it as a permitted variety of the Rioja DOCa in 2007. Not long after Valenciso was established, the owners noticed several of their Tempranillo vines carrying white grapes marked with red stripes on the skin; those vines were propagated and replanted. The small crop went into the estate's Reserva for years, and only with the vines approaching twenty years of age did Valenciso bottle it on its own. Three barrels were made. The winemaking mirrors that of the Valenciso Blanco: a wild ferment, then nine months on lees in Russian steam-bent, untoasted oak barrels.
Drink over the next five years; serve at 11-12°C with grilled white fish, roast poultry or a mild cured cheese.
