Description
Verget au Sud Chardonnay comes from Jean-Marie Guffens’ own Tourettes vineyard in the Luberon, at 400 metres on limestone.
Guffens made his name with white Burgundy through Verget and Guffens-Heynen before extending south into the Vaucluse, where Chardonnay has no appellation standing and the wine must be bottled as Vin de France. The fruit comes from the Plateau de l’Aigle, a rocky, limestone-rich terroir within the Tourettes property that is also the source of the estate’s top Chardonnay, Tinus. Where Tinus is made from free-run juice, this wine is built by selecting during pressing and keeping only the first pressings, so that acidity holds up against the flesh southern fruit naturally brings. Fermentation took place 80 per cent in used oak, and the wine then aged eight months on lees in a mix of concrete and used barrel. No new wood is involved.
Drinking now and holding three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled fish or a creamy cheese.
