Description
Verget au Sud Vin de France Chardonnay is Jean-Marie Guffens's southern project, drawn from vineyards in the Luberon.
Guffens built his reputation in the Mâconnais with Guffens-Heynen and the négociant house Verget, and Verget au Sud applies the same thinking further south. The fruit comes from a number of sites in the Luberon, the high country between the Alpes de Haute Provence and the Vaucluse plain, where altitude keeps night temperatures down and acidity intact in a warm region. Most of the wine ferments and ages in old oak barrels on fine lees for eight months, which builds texture without adding oak flavour. It is released as Vin de France rather than under the Luberon appellation. There is rolling southern fruit here for drinkers who like something to hold onto in their Chardonnay, but also the drive and rocky freshness that runs through everything Guffens makes.
Ready now and best over the next three to four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled fish or a herbed goat's cheese.
