Verget au Sud Vin de France Chardonnay 2023

Verget au Sud Vin de France Chardonnay is Jean-Marie Guffens' southern Chardonnay, drawn from vineyards in the Luberon.

Maison Verget was founded in the Mâconnais by Jean-Marie Guffens, and the au Sud range extends the same approach to fruit from the south of France. This wine comes from a number of vineyards in the Luberon, the high country between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Vaucluse plain, where altitude and cool nights keep acidity in place on a variety that can turn broad in warm climates. It is bottled as Vin de France. For the most part the wine was fermented and aged in old oak barrels on fine lees for eight months, which builds a creamy texture without adding obvious oak flavour. The style sits between two worlds: there is rolling southern fruit and a herbal, provençal cast, but also the purity, drive and rocky freshness that Guffens is known for in Burgundy.

Drink within three years, with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a gratin of vegetables. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
