Description
Verget Bourgogne Grand Elevage Blanc is a regional white built from declassified parcels of Guffens-Heynen and Verget fruit.
Jean-Marie Guffens runs two operations from Vergisson: the small Guffens-Heynen domaine and the larger négociant house Verget. The Grand Elevage label provides a home for parcels declassified from some of the better plots in both. The greater part of the 2020 comes from Guffens's marquee Pierreclos vineyards on clay soils in the Mâconnais, with the balance drawn from the neighbouring villages of Viré and Charnay. The wine was vinified entirely in used barrels, so there is no new oak in the equation. The fermentations finished in early December and maturation continued for a further eight months with bâtonnage to build texture. Sold under the broad Bourgogne appellation, it carries considerably more pedigree in its fruit sources than that label usually implies.
Drinking well now and holding four to six years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled fish or a mild washed-rind cheese.
