Verget Bourgogne Terres de Pierres 2020

Terres de Pierres is Verget's Bourgogne Blanc, a blend of two Mâconnais terroirs declassified to the regional appellation.

Maison Verget was founded in 1990 by the Belgian grower and négociant Jean-Marie Guffens, who buys fruit rather than juice and presses everything at his own cellar in the Mâconnais. This cuvée blends Chardonnay from Mâcon-Charnay with Guffens's young vines at Pierreclos. Neither wine struck the house as especially Mâconnais in style, so the blend goes out under the wider Bourgogne appellation instead. Half was vinified in mature oak and half in a horizontal stainless-steel tank, and the lees were deliberately left unstirred so as not to mask the natural freshness of the wine. It is sealed under screwcap, which suits both the style and the Australian trade. The result is a clean, well-cut white Burgundy that shows the Mâconnais at its most straightforward.

Drink over the next three or four years. Serve at 10 to 12°C with grilled fish, a chicken salad or a soft washed-rind cheese.
