Verget Mâcon-Bussières Vieilles Vignes de Montbrison 2024

Verget Mâcon-Bussières Vieilles Vignes de Montbrison comes from one of the oldest plots in a vineyard sitting below the village, north of the Roche de Vergisson.

Bussières lies in the southern Mâconnais among the limestone escarpments that culminate in the rocks of Vergisson and Solutré. The Montbrison vineyard occupies a gentle southwest-facing slope where shallow clay and limestone soil is thick with surface stone. Maison Verget was founded in Mâcon in 1990 by the Belgian-born Jean-Marie Guffens, who set out to apply Côte d'Or standards of selection and barrel work to Mâconnais fruit, and the house buys from long-standing grower partners. This bottling comes from vines over forty years old. Only free-run juice was used and fermentation took place entirely in wood, with about 25 per cent new oak. Guffens is the source of the line that no wine is over-oaked, only under-fruited, and the seasoning here is judged to sit behind the fruit.

Ready on release and good for five or six years, it suits roast chicken, grilled fish or a creamy gratin. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
