Description
Verget Mâcon-Pierreclos is a négociant white Burgundy from low-yielding vines of more than fifty years on limestone at the top of the Pierreclos hillside.
Mâcon-Pierreclos sits where the Mâconnais meets Beaujolais, and the commune owes its reputation to Jean-Marie Guffens, whose Guffens-Heynen wines, mostly from the Le Chavigne lieu-dit, match the Côte de Beaune for intensity. Seeing the vineyard appear under his Verget négociant label is a recent development. This bottling comes from vines over fifty years old planted on particularly rich limestone at the top of the slope, where yields are naturally low. Only the first pressings are used, and the wine is matured in foudre for eight months before bottling, which gives shape and texture without any obvious oak. The style is balanced rather than showy, with citrus peel and poached pear against a zesty core, and a touch of reduction that adds complexity.
Drinking well now and over the next three to four years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled whiting, roast pork loin or a wedge of comté.
