Verget Mâcon-Pierreclos Lieu Secret 2022

Verget Mâcon-Pierreclos Lieu Secret is made from three parcels that adjoin Domaine Guffens-Heynen’s Chavigne vineyard, their exact location kept quiet.

Pierreclos sits at the crossroads of the Mâconnais and Beaujolais, and owes much of its standing to Jean-Marie Guffens, whose wines from the Chavigne lieu-dit set the benchmark for the commune. Verget is Guffens’ négociant house, buying fruit and juice across southern Burgundy and vinifying it at Sologny. The parcels behind Lieu Secret touch Chavigne itself, and the name is deliberately vague because Guffens would rather his neighbour did not sell those grapes to anyone else. The fruit was harvested in several passes through the vineyard to take each vine at its own ripeness. It was vinified in barrel with a quarter new oak, and the lees were stirred, a decision made on the strength of their condition that year. The result carries the density, power and long, chalky finish this terroir can give.

Worth two or three years in bottle and good for up to eight. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, prawns with garlic butter or a creamy mushroom pasta.
