Verget Mâcon-Pierreclos Lieu Secret 2023

Verget Mâcon-Pierreclos Lieu Secret is made from three parcels bordering Domaine Guffens-Heynen's Chavigne vineyard, the exact location of which the producer will not disclose.

Pierreclos sits in the hills of the Mâconnais, the southern end of Burgundy, where Chardonnay grows on clay and limestone and ripens more fully than it does further north. Maison Verget is the négociant house founded by Jean-Marie Guffens, the Belgian grower behind Domaine Guffens-Heynen, and it built its reputation on buying fruit rather than juice, pressing carefully and treating village wines with the attention usually reserved for grander appellations. This cuvée comes from three parcels of vines that touch the Chavigne vineyard, and the site is kept deliberately vague so that the neighbouring growers keep selling their grapes here. The vines were harvested in several passes to take each one at ripeness, and the wine was fermented in barrel with 25% new oak. The result carries the density and length that mark out Guffens' work in this corner of the Mâconnais.

Ready on release and good for four to six years; serve with roast chicken, pork rillettes or a firm goat's cheese at 10-12°C.
