Description
Verget Pouilly-Fuissé Le Haut de la Roche comes from a high vineyard on the Roche de Vergisson that missed premier cru status only because of its altitude.
The site sits at 400 metres on the Roche de Vergisson, with a south-east exposure and a stony limestone base. Jean-Marie Guffens considers it far more deserving of classification than several of the Mâconnais vineyards promoted in the recent premier cru revision, particularly as warming vintages and drinkers' preference for fresher, lower-alcohol whites make altitude an asset rather than a handicap. The vines here were picked at the very end of the harvest, and low yields produced a compact core of fruit offset by ripe minerality and crunchy freshness. The wine was vinified entirely in oak with a quarter new barrels, which the concentration of the fruit absorbs, and it shows premier cru intensity and length with a silky texture, real tension and a long, palate-scraping close.
Approachable now and capable of five to eight years; serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, scallops or a hard alpine cheese.
