Description
Verget Pouilly-Fuissé Les Combes Vieilles Vignes is built from two parcels facing opposite directions, the oldest of them planted in 1915.
Pouilly-Fuissé is the senior appellation of the Mâconnais, its vineyards spread around the limestone escarpments of Solutré and Vergisson. Les Combes lies in the commune of Solutré-Pouilly and is one of Jean-Marie Guffens' favourite sites. The oldest vines there were planted in 1915 and face north; a second parcel, a mere seventy years old, faces south. Each is picked and vinified separately before the two are blended, and Guffens holds that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The soils are clay and limestone with a higher proportion of clay than most vineyards in the district, which brings weight and power to the wine. For that reason this is one of the few Verget cuvées fermented entirely in oak barrels, of which only a quarter are new, so the oak supports rather than shapes the fruit.
It has the concentration to drink well over the next six to eight years and suits roast turkey, veal in cream sauce or grilled prawns. Serve at 10-12°C.
