Verget Pouilly-Fuissé Terres de Pierres 2022

Verget Pouilly-Fuissé Terres de Pierres is a blend of free-run and press juices from a group of well-regarded vineyards in Vergisson and Fuissé.

Terres de Pierres means stony land, a name Verget uses for several cuvées, so this should not be confused with the Mâcon-Villages of the same name. The blend draws the cool, mineral line from Les Croux, which faces west, and from the pressed juices of the premier crus Sur la Roche and Les Crays, while south-facing vines in Les Moulins and Les Littes contribute density and layered texture. Pouilly-Fuissé sits at the southern end of the Mâconnais, where limestone escarpments around the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson give Chardonnay both weight and cut. The wines fermented naturally and aged for six months in stainless steel, about seventy per cent, and used barrels for the balance, without lees stirring. The result is compact and steely, with a rocky, tightly wound texture and a long, chalky finish.

A pleasure now but at its best with three or more years in bottle; serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, grilled flathead or a young comté.
